Parent Guide

Information about Our Program

The educational philosophy of the Scrilli School is that each child is a wonderful creation of God and that we are entrusted with helping that child and the parents grow in wisdom and understanding.

Classroom activities are presented which teach and reinforce sharing, courtesy, and respect for others. Lessons also focus on listening and obeying one’s teachers and parents. Pre-reading, writing, early math skills, and fine arts skills, such as singing, dancing, free movement, and drawing, are taught.

Students also participate in supervised recreation activities on the playground, weather permitting, each day.

Among the activities the Scrilli School promotes, is the Reading is Fundamental Partnership (RIF), yearly pictures, an active PTA, a graduation ceremony, summer sessions, Family Fun Day, Career Day, Fire Safety Month, Thanksgiving Lunch, and a Christmas Play. We also take advantage of our location in Washington, DC to make educational field trips.

Student Promotions

Students are promoted in September, at the beginning of the school year. The promotion of a student from Class A to Class B and/or from Class B to Class C is solely at the discretion of the teacher.

Scrilli School does not issue “grades” but promotes according to the child’s learning capacity and maturity.

Daily Learning Activities

Naptime

Each child takes a nap after lunch until approximately 3:00 PM. Scrilli School provides cots and blankets for each child.

So as not to disturb nap time, you are asked to make special arrangements in advance with the school director if you need to pick up your child between the hours of noon and 3:00 PM.

Parent Teacher Conferences

Information Coming!

Transportation

The Scrilli School does not provide transportation to transport students to and from school. Transportation is provided to students who participate in school-sponsored trips.

Fire Drills

The Scrilli School participates in monthly practice fire drills.  During this time, students and faculty are shown the exit route for that particular classroom. Each classroom is also given an designated place to stand outside.

Discipline

Self-discipline is an integrated part of each student’s education. The classroom teacher is responsible for handling any disciplinary situations. When this occurs, a conference may be held with the teacher and parent/guardian to resolve certain discipline problems.  A meeting with the administrator will be scheduled if the parent/guardian and teacher cannot agree on a resolution to the problem.  The School Administrator is the final recourse in all disciplinary situations.

Illnesses/Absences

Please notify the Scrilli School by 9:00 AM when your child will arrive late or be absent from school. Refer to the tuition policy regarding extended absences and your tuition payments.

Illness During the School Day

During school, children are in close contact with each other. If children are kept home when the first signs of illness appear, it helps prevent the spread of that illness to other children. Parents are asked to not bring ill children to school. This includes children with fevers, conjunctivitis, persistent running noses, cough, etc.

In the event a child becomes ill or hurt during the school day, the teacher will dismiss or approve the dismissal of the student. Parents/guardians are notified immediately. If they are unable to come for the student, they must make arrangements for a relative or other authorized person to pick up the student in the school office. If a parent/guardian cannot be reached, the person listed as the emergency contact will be called. Therefore, please make sure that throughout the year, you provide the school with current home, work and emergency contact information.

If an emergency exists, the student will be taken to the hospital by ambulance and the parent/guardian notified.

Please make sure your contact information is current!

Lunch and Snacks

Children should arrive each day with a packed lunch, an afternoon snack, and beverage. The school will heat meals when necessary. Food should be in a lunch box/container labeled with your child’s name. It would be helpful if the child’s food items and beverage are marked with the child’s name as well.

All lunches and snacks should be placed on the shelf above his/her coat hook.

Extra Set of Clothing

Accidents do happen! Please make certain your child has a complete change of clothing (underpants, pants and shirt) at school. You may bring these daily or leave them in a bag on your child’s coat hanger in the coat room.

Medications

Your child’s teacher will dispense prescription medications only if there is an authorization letter from your child’s physician. To dispense over-the-counter medications (such as Tylenol or Sudafed), a physician’s medication authorization must be on file.

Parental/Guardian Harassment

The Scrilli School respects the dignity of all people and expects parents/guardians to do the same. Parents/ guardians who harass or insult, staff, other parents, or students may consequently be forbidden from coming onto school grounds. If the problem persists, the parent/guardian may be required to withdraw his/her child from the school.

Termination

Unfortunately, issues may arise that may require the termination or expulsion of a child from the Scrilli School. Please know that we will do everything possible to work with the family of the child(ren) in order to prevent this policy from being enforced.

These are some of the reasons we may have to expel or suspend a child from school:

  • Immediate Causes for Expulsion
    • Child is at risk of causing serious injury to other children or herself/himself.
    • Parent threatens physical or intimidating actions toward staff members.
    • Parent exhibits verbal abuse to staff in front of enrolled children.
  • Parental Actions for Child’s Expulsion
    • Failure to complete required forms
    • Habitual lateness when picking up child.
    • Failure to pay and/or habitual lateness in tuition payments and/or late pick-up fees and failure to comply with school policies.
    • Verbal abuse to staff.
  • Child’s Actions for Expulsion
    • Uncontrollable tantrums/angry outbursts.
    • Ongoing physical or verbal abuse to staff or other children.
    • Excessive biting.

Grievance Procedures

The Scrilli School strives to provide a structure for bringing about resolution and reconciliation between all parties involved.  This is done in an atmosphere of mutual respect and understanding between children, parents and staff. If a grievance between parent/guardian and teacher should arise, the following grievance procedure shall apply:

  • Make an appointment to meet with your child’s teacher.
  • The parent/guardian (grievant) will meet with the teacher to discuss resolution of the grievance.
  • If the grievance is not resolved, the grievant will meet with the school administrators

It is our goal to resolve the grievance to the satisfaction of either party in an expedited time.
